Celebrating Deacon Harold Newchurch

It is with sadness the Deacon Board and Officers of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church announce the passing of Deacon Harold Newchurch. Deacon Newchurch, father of our senior pastor, Reverend Darryl N. Person, went home to be with the Lord on January 13, 2021.

A beloved husband, father, and friend, Deacon Newchurch leaves to celebrate his life his adoring wife, Wilma; sons, Evan (Rochelle), Darryl (Pamela), Everett (LaShawn), and Theodore (Joyce); daughters, Lolita and Carmenita; niece, Maude (deceased); and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A gentle giant, Deacon Newchurch was an active member in his faith community for over 50 years serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church choir. He was also one of the first African American employees at the Chicago Sun-Times where he worked the sports desk before retiring from the paper.

Rather than mourn his loss, the family celebrates his full and wonderful life, his regal spirit, and the joy and love he brought to all. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. To this end, we invite our faith community and friends of Ebenezer to share your warm memories of the patriarch, Deacon Newchurch. Your thoughts will be compiled and presented to the family

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 at Cage Memorial Chapel from 4pm - 7pm. The address of the chapel is 7651 South Jeffery Boulevard, Chicago, IL 60649. Their phone number is 773-721-8900.

The wake will be on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 10am - 11am, and will be held at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. The church is located at 4501 South Vincennes Avenue, Chicago, IL 60653. The service will begin at 11am and will be private and for the family ONLY. All are welcome to view the live stream of the service, however, on either the church Facebook page or website.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in honor of Deacon Newchurch. We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
